Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Loss Supplementation

What causes excessive hair loss?

A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.

Hormonal problems may cause hair loss. If your thyroid gland is overactive or under-active, your hair may fall out. This hair loss usually can be helped by treatment thyroid disease. Hair loss may occur if male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens, are out of balance. Correcting the hormone imbalance may stop your hair loss.

Many women notice hair loss about 3 months after they’ve had a baby. This loss is also related to hormones. During pregnancy, high levels of certain hormones cause the body to keep hair that would normally fall out. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, that hair falls out and the normal cycle of growth and loss starts again.

Some medicines can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners (also called anticoagulants), medicines used for gout, medicines used in chemotherapy to treat cancer, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills and antidepressants.

Certain infections can cause hair loss. Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children. The infection is easily treated with antifungal medicines.

Finally, hair loss may occur as part of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Since hair loss may be an early sign of a disease, it is important to find the cause so that it can be treated.

Do I need a prescription for natural hair loss treatments?

No. The hair loss supplements we have reviewed on this site are offered as nutritional supplements and therefore do not require a prescription.

Are hair loss supplements considered safe?

Yes, as long as they are taken as directed. The hair loss supplements featured on Keepmyhair.ca are considered all-natural and do not contain any hormones, harmful chemicals, or steroids.

What are the side effects of using herbal hair loss products?

None with most supplements. The only side effect reported is a bit of stomach discomfort if the product is not taken with food. The hair loss formulas containing all-natural ingredients have not been shown to have any damaging side effects.

How permanent are the results of hair loss supplementation?

Research indicates that the results seem to be fairly permanent. A maintenance dose may be needed occasionally for those who begin to lose some of their results.

Do hair loss product manufacturers guarantee the results of their products?

The Good ones do. Any reputable hair loss company will offer a full, money back guarantee for those who have less than desirable results. Furthermore, the top companies such as those featured on this site will make the process very easy. Remember, no herbal product works for everyone 100% of the time.

When will I start to be able to notice growth if I start using hair loss products?

The amount of time before results are seen varies considerably due to a number of factors unique to each person. Although unusual, we’ve heard of some people getting results within a couple of weeks. For most, it will take 5-7 months before noticeable results are achieved.

For what period of time should I use herbal hair loss treatments?

Similar to the answer to the last question, we would give these supplements a good 5-6 months before evaluating results. The kind of transformation we’re talking about here takes time. It helps to have reasonable expectations before using any herbal supplement including hair loss treatments.

Will hair loss supplements cause me to gain weight?

No, throughout the course of our study we did not find any evidence of weight gain while using these products (especially if you follow our tips on maximizing results).

If I want to see faster results, can I take more than the recommended dosage or take several products at the same time?

No, it is never a good idea to to stray from the manufacturers guidelines on how and when to take their product. Most hair loss treatment companies have tested and have had thousands of people use their products. They are in the best position to recommend the correct dosage schedule.

Are the results of hair loss supplements permanent?

Yes and no. Some men report that hair loss ceases after taking these products, even when discontinued. This tends to be the case more often in younger men. For others, especially older men, hair loss resumes several months after the product is discontinued. Most men will have to experiment to find the optimum cycle of hair loss supplementation that works best for them.

Can and should hair loss pills be taken in conjunction with Rogaine or Propecia?

Hair loss supplements are safe to take in conjunction with other supplements and medications for the treatment of hair loss. Many users have reported great success using Propecia in conjunction with a hair loss pill, since both products target different phases of DHT production. Topical treatments such as Rogaine will not interfere with the effectiveness of other hair loss supplements and may help to increase the rate of hair regrowth.

Will hair loss pills work for women?

That depends. The active ingredients in many hair loss pills are aimed specifically at hair loss caused by DHT. This compound is not present in significant amounts in the female body, and is not believed to contribute to female hair loss to the degree it does in men. Women are unlikely to experience significant improvement by taking these types of hair loss pills.
There are a number of similar hair loss products available to women that work in different ways. Two of the better ones include Provillus for Women and Rogaine for Women.

Are the companies offering hair loss supplements reputable?

Yes, most of the top ones are. The companies that made our list of the best hair loss treatments all seem to have strong reputations.

How long should I use hair loss supplements?

Obviously, hair won’t grow overnight, but you should expect to see results over a 6-month period.

What is the normal cycle of hair growth and loss?

The normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 6 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter (less than half an inch) per month during this phase. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time. About 10 percent of the hair on your scalp, at any one time, is in a resting phase. After 2 to 3 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place.

It is normal to lose about 100 strands of hair each day as part of this cycle. However, some people may experience excessive (more than normal) hair loss. Hair loss of this type can affect men, women and children.

How does a Topical Solution work?

In hereditary hair loss, a combination of heredity, hormones, and age causes a progressive shrinking, or miniaturization, of certain scalp follicles. This causes a shortening of the hair’s growing cycle. Over time, as the active growth phase becomes shorter, the resting phase becomes longer. Eventually, there may be no growth at all. If the Topical Solution is Minoxidil the exact mechanism of action of minoxidil is uncertain. However, researchers believe that Topical Solutions work in part by partially enlarging the hair follicles and reversing the miniaturization process. By enlarging miniaturized follicles, the growth phase of the hair cycle is prolonged, allowing the hair to become longer and thicker looking. And with more follicles in the growth phase at the same time, it is possible to see improved coverage of the scalp.

Is there a way to know that my Topical solution is working?

There are a few signs that let you know topical treatments are at work on your hair follicles. For example, during the first few weeks of use, there may be a temporary increase in hair shedding. This is a good sign and means that the new growth cycle is beginning, and the hairs that were previously weak are making way for the new healthy ones. Eventually, new growth will appear. This is encouraging and means that topical is actually stimulating regrowth—and reversing the progression of hair loss. Remember, not everyone responds to topical solutions and individual results will vary. If hair loss continues after 2 weeks on any topical solution, stop using and talk to your doctor.

I just started using Minoxidil Topical Solution and I’ve noticed that my hair loss has increased. Is this typical?

Minoxidil stimulates hair follicles to shift from the resting phase to the growth phase. Thus, it is not uncommon to see a temporary increase in shedding during the first 2 weeks using Minoxidil. This occurs in some people as the new hair pushes out the weak hairs, when the hair follicle shifts into the growth phase. It is very much like losing baby teeth to make room for adult teeth. This increase in shedding is only temporary and should subside within a couple of weeks with continued treatment. Please note, however, if increased shedding continues for longer than 2 weeks, you should consult your doctor to rule out other possible medical problems.

Can I apply a Topical Solution to wet hair?

Everyone in our clinical studies were advised to completely dry their hair and scalp before applying the topical solution. However, that’s not always possible. We suggest that you at least towel-dry your hair before applying any topical solution, so that your hair is no longer dripping.

Can I blow-dry my hair after applying a Topical Solution?

Yes. It’s fine to blow-dry your hair; however, we recommend using your dryer at a lower setting.

Can I get my hair wet after applying a Topical Solution?

You can go swimming/go out in rain as long as you use good judgment. Avoid washing off the Topical. If possible, apply the Topical to a dry scalp after swimming. Try not to let your scalp get wet from the rain after applying a Topical.
